Frequently Asked Questions

What is Serp Tracker?

Serp Tracker is a service that tracks your search page position for given words or phrases over time.

How much does it cost?

Basic accounts are free to use. We also offer premium accounts (please register a free account and login to see premium account options).

How many websites can I track?

With a basic (free) account you can track up to 2 domains and up to 10 searches for each domain.

What are the browser requirements for Serp Tracker?

You need a javascript enabled browser to be able to use Serp Tracker.

How often are search positions updated?

Search page positions are recorded daily.

How long do I have to wait until my search position data is updated?

Search positions are tracked daily, so data for each search will update once every 24 hours. If your website is not within the first 100 (or 50 for Bing) search results no data will be recorded for that day. If your position results do not seem to be updating you can check manually through the "view search" link on the "Results" page. Be aware that with Yahoo and sometimes Google manually checking for example a search.yahoo.com (Yahoo US) search term may redirect you to your local page which may not show the same results as we record.

Why is my SERP position showing as 0?

This means the specific search has either just been added (in which case your results will be updated within 24 hours). If your search was added over 24 hours ago and still shows 0 it probably means your website is not coming up within the first 100 results for the search term or phrase provided

Why do I see slightly different result positions when I check in my browser?

Search results can vary depending on a number of factors, which can include location of request, stability of website SERP position (Some sites / search terms seem to stay more or less in the same position. Others will jump around throughout the day or week.)

Another source of difference is that SERP positions vary for Google results when searching and displaying 10 results per page compared to 100 per page (try it and see for yourself).

What types of domain can I enter to be tracked?

We recommend if your website is usually served on the name "www.example.com" to just enter "example.com" into our system. This will give more accurate results, this is because of the way some search engine results are given. We have added this to the todo list, but in general entering the base domain without the 'www' will give more reliable results

However if you have multiple subdomains you will need to enter each sub domain in "My Account -> Domains -> Add Domain" in full, i.e. "www.example.com" and "www2.example.com" etc. You can still simply enter the top level domain and this will act as a catch all, and will record positions of any sub domain of the base domain, but you will not know which sub domain the position record came from.

Important: If you enter your website as www.example.com make sure each search engine is showing results with the "www" as often problems are caused when a user is searching for "www.example.com" but, for example Yahoo, is showing the website result as "example.com" only.

You cannot at this stage track websites that do not have their own top level domain. For example you cannot track "freehosting.com/mywebsite/"

What is the movement score?

Movement score is calculated from a simple algorithm and basically gives you at a glance movement indication over the selected period of time. The best score obtainable is 0 with a SERP position of 1. A negative score indicates your serp position is moving down and a positive score (shown in red) means your site is moving up in SERP position.

How many search results does my website need to be within to get recorded?

Currently we track the first 100 positions in Google, 100 in Yahoo and 50 for Bing. For premium account holders we track the first 300 positions for Google searches

Which search engine results can I track?

At the moment you can track results from Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Why is my Google position recorded above position 100, for example 105?

Update: As of Sep 24th 2010 - Sub results are no longer counted so search results will not display above a position of 100.

Why are my results not showing up when I know they should be coming up within the first 100 results?

If you find some of your sites are being incorrectly recorded or not recorded at all when they should be please let us know so we can find out why and improve the system.

The most common problem is caused by entering a domain into SerpTracker with the www sub-domain prefix when the results are displayed in search engines without the www sub-domain. For example: If you entered www.somedomain.com into SerpTracker in the 'Domains' section but a Google search is showing the website result as simply somedomain.com SerpTracker will not find the position as it will be looking specifically for www.somedomain.com. SerpTracker works like this so that if you do have different sub-domains such as shop.somedomain.com and forum.somedomain.com which go to different pages you can track them seperately.

Does SerpTracker offer custom accounts?

Yes, we are happy to setup custom accounts for you please Contact Us for further information.
